A Call to Action!!
Restoring
the Kappa Kastle
On September 7, 1944 Brother Joseph Craigen signed
a purchase agreement for the house at 269 Erskine, the future
permanent home of the Detroit Alumni Chapter. This two story
brick dwelling, designed by famed architect Albert Kahn, was
constructed in 1905 on then what was called Calhoun Street but
later renamed Erskine Street.
Province Polemarch Ted Owens along with Brother Floyd Penick
was able to solicit donations from all area Brothers
and raise $7,500 to consummate the deal and make their dream
come true. After an additional $10,000 to renovate and
refurbish the building, it was officially dedicated the Kappa
Kastle on Easter Sunday, April 15, 1945.
Interestingly, during its early inception two fraternity
founders were affiliated with the Detroit Alumni Chapter,
Brothers Henry T, Asher and B. K. Armstrong
Preserving our legacy
During the past six decades modest repairs and
remodeling efforts were made to the house interior, but
gradual
wear and tear along with normal aging now require
significant building improvements. And so once again we hear
the familiar echoes from the past calling upon all
area Brothers to help restore, renovate and
preserve our Chapter’s legacy.
Will you answer the call?
